Lohith is a 7-year-old boy. He is studying in standard II. He lives in a gated community with his parents. He has many friends and loves to play with them in the park located inside the community. His best friend is Ramesh, who stays in the same community. They spend the time to play together and share their toys. Lohith’s father bought him a flying helicopter toy. It has become Lohith’s new favorite toy. He played with it for 2 days continuously and then he asked permission from his mother, Simran to play with it with his friends in the park. Simran permitted him but told him to be careful. After sometime Lohith came running to his home. He cried and said loudly, “Mom I will never play with Ramesh. He broke my toy”. Simran tried to pacify him. Lohith was not ready to listen. Ajay has come from the office and told Lohith that they can buy a new toy. Lohith didn’t stop being angry with his friend. He felt bad that he can’t get his helicopter back.
A week passed. Lohith had stopped playing with Ramesh from the last one week. Ramesh parents offered to buy a new helicopter to Lohith. Simran refused them. She didn’t know how to handle Lohith and his anger.
That day Ajay came from his office happily. After a year of hard work, he was awarded the best employee of the year. He was given a prestigious trophy along with a raise. Ajay was on cloud 9. Lohith loved the trophy. It was a beautiful masterpiece with intricate designs. It was in the shape of a beautiful sunflower the company’s logo. Lohith wanted to see it closely. He requested his father to have a closer look. His father gave it him and said him to handle it carefully. Lohith agreed. He took the trophy and was admiring its beauty when suddenly the trophy slipped from his hand and broke into pieces. He was shocked. Simran was stunned and Ajay shouted,” Lohith”. Lohith was scared. He knew his father was upset. He was on the verge of tears. Ajay came running towards him and extended his hand. Lohith who was expecting a slap didn’t understand and stared at his father. Ajay said in a concerned voice, “Don’t move, the glass pieces may hurt you. Just give me your hand and I will lift you”.
Lohith gave his hands and Ajay lifted him as the tiny pieces of glasses were all around him.
Ajay cleaned Lohith, in case the glass pieces may be in his body and changed his dress. Simran cleaned the place. She quickly prepared dinner and called them. Lohith was expecting his father to be angry on him. He didn’t seem so and he was confused. He wanted the storm to pass. He couldn’t wait for it longer. Slowly he asked his father, “Are you not angry with my mistake, dad”. His father said,” no”. “How come you are not angry with me, Daddy?” Lohith asked the question, which was gnawing him. Ajay replied quietly, “you didn’t break it intentionally and it was not your mistake so it’s okay”. Lohith probed further, “Dad it was your dream for many years. I have broken it in seconds, didn’t you feel bad. Ajay said, “yes I felt bad for a second that the coveted trophy is now broken into pieces but when I saw you standing there, my primary concern was you. I can work hard and get another trophy, but I can’t get another Lohith. Material things can be bought, relationships are the most valuable thing in the world. You can never buy them, it is nurtured with love and care. Never hurt your relationships for material things”.
Lohith felt something snap in his heart. He felt bad that he was angry with his best friend for a week for just a toy. His best friend had given him many times more happiness than the toy. Still, he felt worse for that toy than his friend. He knew Ramesh didn’t break it intentionally. It was just an accident. He had behaved very rudely and punished his best friend for no mistake of his. He decided to meet his friend the next day and apologize him for his behavior.
He hugged his father tightly and told “Good night “and went to sleep. Ajay knew he would meet his best friend the next day.
Simran who was quiet all along queried to Ajay. “I am really proud of you hubby dear. I was worried about your reaction. A few years back I broke your favorite coffee mug. You were upset with me.You didn’t speak to me for 2 days. What happened now? I expected you to be angry with him”. Ajay smiled back. “Yes, I felt really bad for one particular second when the trophy was shattered in pieces. I also knew that my reaction this second will be an example for our son for years to come. I was also worried that he may hurt himself in the panic. I didn’t want to be a bad example. I am a father now and I can’t be the same guy. I have two little eyes watching my every moment”. Simran smiled at him. The family slept in peace that night.
